Work notice: Blasting on site from October to December

Remediation work is underway on the Giant Mine site, with activities expected to continue throughout the fall. Blasting is required for the production of quarry rock, in proximity to the Ingraham Trail (Highway 4).

Blasting begins in mid-October and could extend to mid-December.

Area users may see temporary delays along Highway 4, specifically around Kilometre 4.3 (main site access). Maximum delay to the public would be 10 min per day.

The contractor will establish a blast radius zone prior to blasting. Blast radius zones are subject to change for each individual blast, but generally are between 100 and 350 metres from the detonation. This zone must be clear of all land users for the duration of each blast, until the "all clear" signal is sounded. The contractor will be controlling traffic to prevent access to the blast radius zone during the blasts. Please observe safety signage, and pay special attention to warning signals and clearance procedures.

Public Safety notice: work season continuing into fall

The Project team regularly monitors wind forecasts and real-time wind speed to inform steps to reduce and control the dust at site year-round. On-going site activities are expected to produce some dust. Even though the Project team has dust prevention measures in place, on very windy days dust has the potential to blow off site.

The Giant Mine Remediation Project continually monitors air quality in the communities of Yellowknife and Ndilǫ. Real-time air quality measurements and collected dust samples are tested for metals, including arsenic. The Project team will immediately assess and appropriately act if results indicate arsenic or other metals of concern.

Members of the public are able to check the air quality status at the site and around Yellowknife in real time on the Government of the Northwest Territories' Air Quality Monitoring Network. Stations you can choose to view include:

Public safety notice: stay safe near the Giant Mine site

The Project team reminds land users that the Giant Mine site, including the townsite, is contaminated. Public access to the site is prohibited at all times due to health and safety risks. The Project team monitors the site 24 hours a day to ensure security and protection of the public.

For the next several years, public access to the public parking area, the Yellowknife Historical Society, the Giant Mine Boat Launch and Great Slave Sailing Club will not change. Temporary, short disruptions in access to the public boat launch area may occur due to certain remediation activities. The Giant Mine Remediation Project's goal is to maintain public access to the water at all times during the open water season.

When enjoying activities outdoors, including off-road and boating activities, please:

• respect in-water clearance procedures during blasting activities
• respect property boundaries and posted warning signs
• stay off the Project site
• stay on the roadway or dedicated pull-outs when driving the Ingraham Trail
• use caution when near the site
