Canada has reached a settlement agreement with former students of Île-à-la-Crosse School.
About the settlement agreement
On January 29, 2026, Canada and the plaintiffs in the class action about the Île-à-la-Crosse School announced that a proposed settlement agreement was reached in the class action about the Île-à-la-Crosse School.
Canada will pay to administer the settlement and legal costs. Key elements of the settlement agreement include:
- individual compensation to former students under the settlement agreement for their experience at Île-à-la-Crosse school
- an additional $10 million to support:
- healing
- wellness
- language protection
- education
- commemoration
Settlement approval hearing
The parties to the settlement agreement will ask the Saskatchewan Court of King's Bench to approve the proposed settlement agreement on March 30 and 31, 2026.
